The Dhaka Times Desk Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also hoping to pass the test that he will face shortly after.
The Canadian Parliament is going to hold a vote of confidence on his government this month. Although Trudeau's Liberal Party has been weakened there by a minority and financial scandals, the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP) continues to support the leader. Trudeau is universally accepted.
The fourth-largest political party in Canada's parliament is not going against Trudeau after he promised adequate support to families and businesses amid the coronavirus recession. But after that, difficult times are going to come in front of the rulers.
On August 23, the country's Minister of Veterans Affairs and former Air Force helicopter navigator Erin O'Toole was chosen as the new leader of the country's Conservative Party. He is expected to energize the opposition in the Canadian Parliament.
Seven of Canada's 10 premiers are Conservative members or supporters. They are at odds with Trudeau on several issues, such as priority spending and the influence of the central government on provincial governments. The NDP can also demand additional benefits from the Canadian Prime Minister. In this situation, Justin Trudeau may have to give an early election in the spring of 2021 (March to June).
The Trudeau government may not face much opposition amid the ravages of the pandemic. On September 30, the country's parliament unanimously passed the Workers' Financial Assistance Bill. Opposition Leader O'Toole warned of a growing fiscal deficit but did not call for an immediate end to aid.
Canada's Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) expects the country's fiscal deficit to reach C$330 billion this year, about 15 percent of GDP. Also, the amount of public debt may increase further up to 17 percent.
But the main battle will be on issues other than financial support. Graham Fox, president of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, a Montreal-based think tank, believes Trudeau will face opposition from provincial chiefs mainly on principle.
Justin Trudeau's proposals such as child care, job training are primarily the responsibility of provincial governments. The provinces also expect financial support from the central government, but not influence. However, the Trudeau government's statement largely ignores these demands.
The current Canadian government has pledged to end greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. But Alberta Conservative Leader Jason Kenney has complained that the federal government is doing too little to help the oil and gas industry.
