Recently, a report published by UNICEF on the situation of child marriage in Bangladesh informed about this rate. According to a 2011 survey, 52 percent of girls in Bangladesh were victims of child marriage. However, in 2018, UNICEF reported that the child marriage rate in Bangladesh was 59 percent.
A virtual event was organized to mark the release of the report titled 'Ending Child Marriage: A Profile of Progress in Bangladesh'. State Minister for Women and Child Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira and other officials joined it from the secretariat side. Claudia Cappa, Senior Advisor of UNICEF, presented the report on that occasion.
The senior adviser of UNICEF presented the report and said that 3.8 million women in the entire population of the country have been subjected to child marriage (married before the age of 18). Among them, 1 crore 3 million were married before 15 years. Child victims of child marriage mostly belong to poor families and live in villages. The dropout rate of child married girl students is almost 4 times higher than unmarried girl students.
5 out of every 10 married people give birth before the age of 18 and every 8 before the age of 20. The report also highlighted that progress in reducing child marriage is greater among the upper class and the wealthy.
Dhaka division has the highest number of child marriages in Bangladesh. At least 90 lakh women in this category have been subjected to child marriage. Chapainawabganj is again at the top among the districts. The child marriage rate in this district is 73 percent. On the other hand, child marriage is lowest in Chittagong district. The rate of child marriage in this district is 39 percent.
