The office of Kashmir Times is located in the media quarter of Srinagar, the main city of Kashmir. On October 19, the local estate department closed the media office. However, the authorities did not mention any reason for the closure of Kashmir Times.
Kashmir Times is one of the oldest media of Kashmir Valley. The head office of this newspaper is in Jammu. The newspaper was printed from two places, Jammu and Kashmir.
In this regard, Anuradha Bhasin, owner and executive editor of Kashmir Times, said that no systematic procedure was followed to seal the office. No prior notice was given. Estate department officials came and kicked out the news workers and closed the office.
Indian media reported that the newspaper was allotted the site in the early 1990s. Anuradha Bhasin alleged that she was also evicted from her official residence in Jammu earlier this month. He said that the closure of his office is part of an insidious politics. The Indian administration has taken such a step to 'suppress' him.
Anuradha Bhasin said that last year she went to court against the blocking of communication. Government advertisements in Kashmir Times were stopped from the day after the court visit.
In the first week of August last year (2019), Kashmir's autonomous rule and constitutional special status were abrogated. India's only Muslim-majority state was divided into two federal parts and annexed to central rule. The Indian government shut down communications in Kashmir for months as part of a crackdown on protests against the move. Also, the main regional leaders of Kashmir were also put under house arrest at that time.
Anuradha Bhasin said, "We took a stand at that time against shutting down communication systems, internet and mobile and land phones. I also wrote about the matter and we approached the court. It is from that anger that such a repressive action of the administration started on us.
However, the local authorities, contradicting Anuradha Bhasin's allegations, said that this was not a repressive measure at all. It is a systematic work. We have taken possession of the government building given to Bhasin's father Ved Bhasin. We have not closed the newspaper office.
Ved Bhasin, father of Kashmir Times editor Anuradha Bhasin, founder editor of the newspaper, passed away in 2015. Anuradha Bhasin has been running the magazine since then.
