According to media reports, they were shackled and beaten by teachers of this Islamic school called "Khalwa" who are known as "Sheikhs". They manage these schools.
The news media BBC has also filmed the beating and torture of children in 23 such schools using hidden cameras. There are at least 30,000 such schools in Sudan. "I can never forgive what happened to my son," said the father of a tortured teenager named Nader. I want the whole world to know. I don't want it to be a secret.
Nader was beaten so violently and brutally that he almost died. He and his friend were caned by the school teachers. The BBC reported that they studied at an Islamic school known as Khalwa. There are 30,000 such khalwa in Sudan. All schools like this school provide free education. However, the news of terrible torture on children is often heard there. The BBC also filmed beatings and torture of children in 23 such schools using hidden cameras.
The BBC said they witnessed numerous children in chains. A teenager said, sometimes 6-7 of us are asked to run with chains. When we fell, they would beat us with canes. We stood up again.
Many were even beaten for bad use, the BBC reported. If they made a mistake while reciting the Qur'an, they would attack others. When asked about this, a teacher told the BBC, "If you don't beat them, they don't memorize."
The khalwa in which the student named Nader studied was one of the worst khalwa ever seen by the BBC. There were more children chained than others. There was also a prison there. Nader said that he was tortured there for 5 days without any food or water.
These khalawas are managed by top religious leaders of the country. They are called Sheikhs. These sheikhs also have a lot of power within the community. Their influence is also extensive. Cases where families file complaints against them are also rare. But Nader's family is determined to get justice.
In this regard, Nader's mother said, I am willing to pay any price for the truth. I will say, I am not afraid at all. We had no rights in the past. Now the situation has changed. Now after the coming of new government we are getting our rights.
Two teachers were accused of brutally torturing Nader. They haven't done any anesthesia yet. The hearing has been adjourned 5 times.
Not only Nader, many other children were beaten. One teenager said, 'They would tie me up, put me on the ground and beat me with canes.' "You didn't try to tell them anything," the teenager said, "I couldn't say anything." Because they tied my face. They used to stuff pieces of cloth in my mouth.
Meanwhile, the new government of Sudan has said that they are determined to stop the torture of the Khalwa. The country's minister of religious affairs has also been tasked with reforms to ensure that there are no beatings, torture, human rights abuses or child rights violations in any way.
Sudan's Minister of Religious Affairs Nasreddin Mufare said, 'Anyone who breaks the law must be stopped. If necessary, his Khalwa will be closed.' But in reality this is not happening. Many khalwa are still open. Torture is also going on there.
