Gambling in the name of betting on the game of cricket led to his ruin. The businessman of Barabazar of the upazila used to regularly travel to the gambling games sitting at Karim Ullah Goli, Zip Stand, Kamalkhani Road, Adarsh School Road, every year during the Indian Premier League (IPL). At one time, his business was strained. However, he gambled with loans. In the end, he had to sell the shop and pay off the debt.
Four years ago, 30-year-old Noor Islam of Pakuria Union of Sherpur Sadar Upazila used to indulge in IPL gambling. At one point, he sold his truck worth 40 lakhs for only 25 lakhs! Noor Islam, who lost money in gambling, is now a driver of another truck.
Cricket, a gentleman's game, has long been tainted by gambling. Many famous players have lost their careers due to match-fixing or spot-fixing. Gambling is not only limited to the players or officials, but also involves the spectators. Watching the game on television, many viewers of Bangladesh indulge in betting. This gambling has now spread like an epidemic in all levels of the country. Most of the gambling is around the IPL which is long lasting and has the participation of world cricket stars. Professional gamblers are also taking this opportunity. Due to which many are destitute.
Due to the corona virus epidemic, even though there is no frenzy of spectators in the field, the gambling season is still going on in the country around the IPL. From cities to villages, from tea shops to elite areas, various clubs, over the phone or online, this gambling is going on openly. T20 version of the game of cricket is also being gambled on through mobile phone and betting site apps.
Attacks, clashes and even murders sometimes occur due to disputes over gambling money. Gambling is legally prohibited in our country. However, despite the police-RAB monitoring of casinos, houses and other gambling, there is no raid on IPL gambling in the capital. However, after the IPL gambling took a terrible shape in some areas of the country, the police and RAB have launched an operation. Several people have already been arrested in some districts. Recently, to prevent IPL gambling in Feni's Parashuram, the mayor of Feni has taken the initiative to shut down the sports channels of cable networks after evening. The local police conducted a miking operation in Kurigram to warn about IPL gambling.
When asked about this, RAB's law and media wing director Lt. Col. Ashiq Billah said, 'The gambling that is currently taking place on the cricket game has come to our attention. Many gamblers have been caught in Naogaon.'
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Walid Hossain said, 'We have also received information about this. Our commissioner sir has also given special instructions to stop this gambling. Our surveillance has already started.'
Things to do to prevent Corona virus
