The Dhaka Times Desk Legendary Indian actor Soumitra Chatterjee is no more. Panja fought with death in the hospital for about a month and a half and breathed his last today (Sunday) around 12:30 PM local time in Kolkata. Soumitra was 85 years old at the time of his death.
Kolkata's Anandabazar newspaper confirmed the news with reference to the hospital. The actor was undergoing treatment in the hospital since October 6. He was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Kolkata due to Corona. After plasma therapy, his corona report came negative. Then he began to respond to treatment. But suddenly his physical condition became critical. Since then he was completely on ventilation.
From Friday, Soumitra's physical condition began to deteriorate. Complications of heart and kidney are greatly increased. The 'heart rate' also increases. Nervous problems are increasing. At this time, the oxygen level fluctuates greatly.
Finally he died today (Sunday) afternoon after all efforts of doctors failed. Yesterday, the hospital informed that they are only hoping for a miracle.
The original home of Soumitra's family was in the village of Kaya near Shilaidah in present-day Kushtia, Bangladesh. Soumitra Chattopadhyay was born on 19 January 1935 in Nadia, West Bengal.
Soumitra Chatterjee studied literature at Amherst Street City College, Calcutta University. His first work on the big screen was in the titular role in world famous director Satyajit Ray's 'Apoor Sansar', which was produced in 1959. Earlier, Soumitra Chatterjee was a radio announcer and also acted in small roles on stage.
Actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay acted in at least 14 films of Satyajit Ray. Later also worked with directors like Mrinal Sen, Tapan Singh, Ajay Ker. Apart from movies, he also acted in plays, Yatra and TV serials. Wrote plays-poems, also directed plays. He was also widely known as a reciter.
