The US multinational pharmaceutical company Moderna Inc. claims that the corona vaccine developed by them will be about 95 percent effective in preventing the pandemic. In a span of four weeks, vaccine tests have been conducted on the bodies of nearly 30,000 corona patients. The results show that the vaccine is 94.5 percent effective.
Apart from Moderna, another US company, Pfizer, and the German company BioEntech, are on the way to approve the vaccine. Their vaccine is claimed to provide more than 90 percent protection.
However, it is a matter of concern that Pfizer's developed corona vaccine showed positive results in just two days, and more than 80 percent of its doses have been purchased in advance by the rich countries of the world. Recently UK Corona campaigners gave this information.
Because it was sold before production, there was basically no other way for poor countries to get this vaccine. Because of this, more than 85 percent of people worldwide will be denied access to this vaccine.
Pfizer said in the first formal review of its vaccine that immunity was 90 percent effective in people who had never been exposed to the virus before. They have set a target of producing 135 million doses of this vaccine before the end of 2021. Of this, 82 percent of the total production, or more than 1 billion doses, has already been purchased by rich countries.
The United States has already purchased 100 million doses of the vaccine. They have booked another 50 crore doses. Even after all US citizens have been immunized with this amount of vaccine, millions of doses will remain. As of Monday, Pfizer had sold 40 million doses of the vaccine to Britain and 200 million to the EU. Another 10 crore doses have also been booked for Europe. In a statement, Britain's corona campaign group Global Justice Now mentioned that Pfizer's partner in vaccine development, the German company BioEntech, received 881 million dollars from their government and 100 million dollars from the European Investment Bank.
Nick Dedarin, director of Global Justice Now, said, 'Pfizer claims they have not received any state support. But the pre-sale of 100 million doses of the vaccine before production, not to mention the tax issue and the direct public funding of Pfizer's partner, show that their claim is completely misleading.' He added, 'Until we can break the alliance of these big corporations over our medicines, this injustice will continue.'
Pfizer also has the potential to provide some doses to developing countries under the World Health Organization's Global Access Facility for Covid-19 Vaccines (Covax), Global Justice noted. However, these doses are very small compared to the total vaccine produced by Pfizer. Because of this, hundreds of millions of people will be denied the right to receive vaccines.
Some wealthy countries, including the United States, have also refrained from participating in global efforts to ensure vaccine sharing led by the World Health Organization to ensure vaccine availability first. Now they are the ones who have bought huge quantities of vaccines by depriving others. In this situation, Global Justice has again called for the suspension of global patent rules from the beginning of this week so that poor countries can produce the generic version of Pfizer's vaccine. Last month, South Africa and India also proposed to the World Trade Organization to suspend rules related to vaccines and medical supplies related to Covid-19.
