The Dhaka Times Desk Elections were held in Indian-administered Kashmir for the first time after the abrogation of special status. Farooq Abdullah-led Gupkar alliance has won the majority of seats in District Development Council (DDC) elections in Union Jammu and Kashmir.
According to an NDTV news, this alliance called People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is pro-India but in favor of self-rule in Kashmir. They managed to win 112 of the total 280 seats. This election was held in 8 phases starting from last November 28 till December 19.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 74 seats there. Out of this BJP got only 3 seats from Muslim dominated Kashmir. The rest came from 4 Hindu majority districts of Jammu region. Where they also have significant support.
Moreover, independent candidates got 49 seats and the current main opposition party of India Congress got only 26 seats. It is said that the results of the remaining few seats will be declared later.
The Election Commission said more than 51 percent of the nearly 6 million voters across the region's 20 districts had cast their votes. It is seen as the biggest festival of democracy.
Sajjad Lone, president of the India-backed political party People's Conference and PAGD spokesperson, told the media that this election is the verdict of the people of Kashmir in favor of PAGD. So hopefully we can restart the political process.
Indian law enforcement agencies arrested most of the region's political leaders in August 2019 following the abrogation of special status in Kashmir. Since then political activities in Jammu and Kashmir almost stopped.
People's Conference President and PAGD spokesperson Sajad Lone said, "We have come together for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. There is no time to pay attention to what others have said or not said.
