The Dhaka Times Desk A Chinese journalist has been jailed for 4 years for reporting on the Corona virus in Wuhan, China. The first corona virus appeared in the country's Wuhan.
According to a BBC report, Zhang Zhan, the journalist, was accused of 'inciting conflict and destabilizing the situation'.
The 37-year-old journalist is also a former lawyer. He was arrested last May. Since then he has been on hunger strike for several months. His lawyer claims that his health condition is not good at all.
Zhan is one of several journalists who have come under fire from the government for reporting on the deadly virus since it was first detected in Wuhan.
It is noted that no media can operate independently in China. Anyone who has reported on the inability to handle the Corona virus situation properly has had to face the Chinese government's wrath.
Yesterday (Monday) morning Zhan appeared in court in Shanghai with his lawyer.
The charges against him say that in February he traveled to Wuhan and independently published news about the coronavirus situation.
His livestreaming of those reports was widely circulated on social media, causing him to come to the attention of Chinese authorities.
ChHRD, a network of human rights organizations in China, said Zhan's report also spoke of the detention of other independent journalists, mainly reporting on behalf of families seeking accountability.
According to this organization, Zhan disappeared from Wuhan on May 14. A day later, it was learned that the police had arrested him in Shanghai, which is 640 kilometers from Wuhan.
A formal complaint was filed against him last November. The charge sheet said he "spread false information in text messages, videos and other media such as YouChat, Twitter and YouTube".
Zhan has also been accused of "maliciously" spreading information by giving interviews to foreign media. In the end, the country's court recommended that he be sentenced to four years in prison.
