The Dhaka Times Desk Now scientists have discovered a new molecule, with the help of which a type of bacteria emits electricity through respiration.
Researchers have discovered that these bacteria exhale through tubes made of special proteins. But these bacteria do not emit carbon dioxide with respiration like humans, they mainly emit electrons; which is capable of generating small electric currents. This sensational information has emerged from the study of scientists at Yale University in the United States. Their research article was published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.
Breathing is quite complicated for bacteria without mouth and lungs. We normally take in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. But Geobacter, a class of groundwater-dwelling bacteria that depend on organic waste, emits electrons. The electrons released from them create a small electric current. The study revealed that it is possible to operate small electronic devices.
In this regard, Nikhil Malvankar, assistant professor at Yale University, said, Geobacter usually breathes hundreds of times more than its size through the trachea. Basically the airways are called nanowires. Although these tiny filaments are a million times smaller than the width of a human hair, they can shuttle hundreds to thousands of electrons in a bacterial body.
Professor Nikhil also explained how this electricity could be fed into a microbial power grid – something he and his colleagues have discovered. Using advanced microscopy techniques, they also discovered 'secret molecules' that help bacteria emit electrons. Such molecules had not previously been found in bacteria.
