But Christian religious leaders are still adamant about their decision. Christian senior religious leader Godefa Merha said Aksum is like Mecca to them. They believe that just as churches are forbidden in the holy places of Islam, there can be no mosques in Aksum either. Aksum is a holy place in their language. Which is called City of Monastery. If anyone comes here to build a mosque, we will die. It will never be accepted. We will not approve this request of Muslims in our lifetime.
Meanwhile, a group of Muslims under the banner of 'Justice for Aksum Muslims' is campaigning day after day for the construction of a mosque in the city. Their claim is that they have the right to build a mosque and have the opportunity to pray.
History says that at the beginning of Islam, the first Muslims came to this city of Aksum fleeing the persecution of non-Muslim rulers in Mecca. The then Christian king welcomed them at that time.
It was essentially the first appearance of Muslims outside the Arabian Valley. At present, 85 percent of Aksum's 73,000 inhabitants are Orthodox Christians, 10 percent are Muslims, and 5 percent are followers of other forms of Christianity.
In this situation, some Muslims of Aksum also think that this movement to build a mosque is meaningless. Because this ancient city has been known for its religious tolerance since time immemorial.
Aziz Mohammad, a doctor by profession living in Aksum for 20 years, said, 'Muslims and Christians are living together in Aksum. We have a very good relationship with them.
They never interfere with any of our work. But we have been praying on the streets for many years. It would be great if we had a mosque.'
