The Dhaka Times Desk According to a report of the Indian media Times of India, people in several districts of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh are eating donkey meat!
People there claim that eating this meat increases strength and virility. Donkey slaughter has recently been reported from Godavari, Krishna, Prakasam and Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh state. Donkey meat costs around Rs 1,000 per kg. Since killing the animal is illegal in India, some unscrupulous businessmen are doing these things secretly.
Those concerned said that donkey milk has been popular for years in most parts of the state. However, recent times have seen a huge popularity of the animal's meat.
The Times of India also reported in their news that there are several criminal gangs behind this incident. They are jointly selling donkey meat in Andhra Pradesh. Out of which one group does the work of collecting the meat, the other slaughters the donkeys and sells the meat to the buyers.
In this regard, Gopal R. Surbathula, an official of an animal rescue organization (NGO) based in Canada, said that the donkey is on the verge of extinction from Andhra Pradesh. That is why the animal is being brought there from Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Urging the state government to come forward to protect the animal, he added that the law enforcement agencies must take initiative to keep the donkeys safe.
In this regard, West Godavari Animal Husbandry Department Joint Director G Nehru Babu said that donkey slaughter is a punishable offense under law and strict action will be taken against those indulging in this crime.
