The Dhaka Times Desk The Myanmar government has written to the Indian government to return those police officers who fled after refusing to obey the orders of the Myanmar military junta.
According to a BBC Bangla report, in the letter, the Myanmar government asked to send the officials back for the sake of "friendly relations" between the two countries.
Deputy Commissioner of Police of Champai District in the Indian state of Mizoram Maria City Juali told news agency that a letter was sent to her from Phalam District Police in Myanmar. It said that Myanmar has information that 8 police officers have escaped and entered India.
The letter also states that 'in the interest of maintaining friendly relations between the two countries, the 8 police officers who escaped from Myanmar and entered Indian territory have been arrested and requested to be handed over to Myanmar.'
Miss Juali said that the matter has been reported to the Central Government of India and action will be taken accordingly after receiving the Home Ministry's instructions from Delhi.
At least 30 people, including police officers and their family members, have crossed the border and sought asylum in India, Reuters said.
Citing Indian officials, news agency AFP reported that many Myanmar nationals were still waiting at the border to enter India on Saturday.
In early February, Myanmar's military seized power and arrested the country's democratically elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, mass protests have erupted demanding an end to military rule in the country, which continues to this day.
Although initially the army showed some leniency towards the protesters, in the last few weeks the army has started a strict crackdown. So far 55 protesters have died, most of them youth.
The country has witnessed internet blackouts, overnight army raids, illegal arrests and street chases and beatings of protesters, firing point-blank bullets or shooting them in the head or chest from a distance.
