The Dhaka Times Desk Today is March 8, International Women's Day. The day is being celebrated through various programs in Bangladesh like other countries of the world with the slogan 'Women leadership will build a new world of equality during the corona virus'.
Behind the celebration of this women's day is the history of the struggle for the rights of women workers. On March 8, 1857, a group of working women in a yarn factory in New York, United States, protested against wage discrimination, fixed working hours and hostile work environment. The owner of the yarn factory repressed them.
After many events, the first women's conference was held in 1908 under the leadership of German socialist leader and politician Clara Zetkin. In continuation of which, since 1975, the United Nations has been celebrating the day as Women's Day. Since then, the day began to be observed in different countries to remember the history of women's struggle. The continuation of which is still continuing.
On the occasion of Women's Day, President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages.
The President said in his speech that women's development is clearly visible today as a result of the successful implementation of various initiatives of the current government. Through successful participation of women in business and commerce, politics, judiciary, administration, diplomacy, armed forces, law and order forces, peacekeeping missions, the country is gradually progressing on the path of development.
He urged men and women to work together to build a poverty-free and happy-prosperous Bangladesh by empowering women, establishing equal rights and ensuring women's participation in the mainstream of national development.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in her speech, 'Bangladesh is now a role model for gender equality and women's empowerment. We have taken various plans and steps to ensure the participation of women in every aspect of our national development. Gender responsive budget formulation in various ministries and inclusion of women at the grass root level in self-employment activities under the social safety net. Women's poverty is decreasing. Women's participation in the national economy is also increasing.
The Prime Minister also said, 'A smooth working environment has been created for women in the workplace. The country has strict laws and enforcement of laws to protect women and children. We have ensured the participation of women in every field of governance, politics, diplomacy, law making, policy making, administration, high level of law enforcement, economy, journalism, information technology, arts and literature, sports.'
Today, women are breaking prejudices. They have advanced a lot in social, economic and cultural fields. Active participation in women's empowerment, education, economy, politics and jobs is also increasing. Even in challenging professions like the military and journalism, their presence is increasing.
Sociologists think that 50 percent of the population are women, development is never possible without them. That is why the contribution of women should be properly evaluated. Ensuring a safe environment for women at work has therefore become essential today to increase their contribution to the economy. Let the women's society of our country move forward in harmony with the world, that is the expectation of all of us along with men.
