The mosque you see is the historical Pagla Bara Jame Mosque of Sunamganj district. Locally it is known as Raipur Bara Jame Masjid.
Pagla Bara Jame Masjid is located on the banks of Mahasingh River at Pagla Bazar in South Sunamganj Upazila of Sunamganj District.
In 1931, local businessman Yasin Mirza started the construction of Pagla Bara Jame Masjid through skilled architect Mumin Astagar from India. The foundation stone of the mosque was laid on Friday 5th Ashwin 1331. After 10 years of continuous work, the mosque got its present form. The length of this two-storied mosque is 150 meters and the width is 50 meters. The roof of the mosque also has 3 domes of 25 feet height and 6 towering minarets.
The architectural style and aesthetic craftsmanship of Pagla Bara Jame Masjid attracts everyone. The mihrab of the mosque is designed by cutting magnificent stones. The elaborate tiles around the mosque were imported from Italy, Germany and England. The special feature of the mosque is that no rod was used in the construction of this two-storey mosque. Built entirely of brick, the mosque's foundation is placed on reinforced concrete to prevent earthquakes. There is a large Eidgah ground in front of the Pagla Bara Jame Masjid and an entrance gate on the north side.
