Pakistan started Madrasas for Hijras

The Dhaka Times Desk The government of Pakistan has for the first time taken the initiative of opening private madrassas for hijras to divert them from anti-social activities.

Reena Khan, Head of Hijra Madrasa, said that most of the families do not accept Hijras. They were thrown out of their homes. Due to which Hijras are forced to get involved in wrongdoing and various anti-social activities.

He also said, once I was one of them. Holding back tears, Reena Khan recalls her bad times, saying her family disowned her at the age of 13. Later he was forced to beg. At the age of 17, he joined a transgender group. They were danced at weddings and other occasions. Later he left these works.

Rina, the head of the madrasa established for a different and backward community, also said that the government never got any help in this work. However, some officials have also promised to help students get jobs.

Rina Khan imparts sewing training to madrasa students. Reena Khan is teaching sewing and needlework to students in the hopes of raising funds as well as some donations. By doing this, it will be possible to arrange their employment.

The government of Pakistan recognized third gender (transgender) people in 2018. Voting rights are also given to them. Yet Hijras still remain among the backward communities. Many also do begging, dancing and prostitution to earn a living.

Hamza Shafqat, the country's deputy commissioner of Islamabad, said the madrassa could also help integrate them into mainstream society. I am hopeful that if this arrangement can be implemented in other cities, it will improve.'

It should be noted that Pakistan's 2011 census reported about 10,000 transgenders living in the country, but trans rights groups say the number could be more than 300,000.
