The ship, Evergreen, had been stranded for several days in one of the world's most important shipping lanes. That is why other ships have to take different routes.
The 400-meter-long ship deviated from its course due to the strong winds and tidal pressure of the storm that hit the Egyptian desert on March 21. The ship turned and completely blocked the course of the canal transversely.
About 50 ships per hour were using this one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. However, after this incident, a huge traffic jam was created at the mouth of the Suez Canal!
As of Sunday, around 450 cargo ships were stranded in the sea on both sides of the 120-mile-long canal and in nearby port sites, according to an estimate as of Sunday. Many ships were eventually forced to divert. Although the canal is currently open, it will take 3 and a half days to clear the jam, Egyptian officials said.
The Suez Canal is overseen by the Suez Canal Authority of Egypt. Officials at the facility first used tugboats to free Evergreen. An attempt was made to turn the ship around by throwing a thick rope from the ship and pulling it with a tugboat. At the same time, earthen digger is also used to free the part of the ship stuck in the canal.
As the tugboats struggled to push the monstrous vessel, earthmoving diggers and dredgers were brought in. A digger is used to excavate the part of the ship where it ran ashore. Dredgers remove mud and sand from the ship's bottom and surroundings.
Maritime expert Sal Marcogliano told the media that such dredgers are often used in the Suez Canal. Their job is to maintain the navigability of the canal. Long pipes from the dredgers go underwater to basically suck up the mud and sand and throw it out. About 30,000 tons of sand and mud are removed from the bottom of the ship with dredgers.
Egypt's economy is largely dependent on the Suez Canal. Before the corona pandemic, about 2% of Egypt's GDP came from Suez Canal tolls.
The Suez Canal Authority reported that the closure of the canal cost them an average of $1.5 million per day.
On the other hand, it is known from the statistics published in Lloyd's List, that an average of 9.6 billion dollars of business was stopped every day due to the detention of hundreds of ships loaded with goods.
Evergreen was eventually freed using tugboats and dredgers. Failing that, a third option was also considered. And that is the method of lightening the ship by removing all cargo and fuel oil.
The chairman of the Suez Canal Authority said that a total of 113 ships had already passed through the canal after the stranded vessel was evacuated.
