The Dhaka Times Desk A passenger launch named MV Rabit Al Hasan sank yesterday (Sunday) with at least 50 passengers on board after being hit by a cargo ship in Shitalakshaya. So far the bodies of 5 women have been recovered.
Rescue operations continued by the fire service and BIWTA's rescue diving team. Yesterday Sunday (April 4) the launch left Narayanganj at around 6:30 pm and reached Syedpur Coal Ghat area in Shitalakshya river at around 6:30 pm when the launch was hit by the cargo ship named SK-3.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of the fire service, said that the bodies of 5 female passengers of the sunken launch have been recovered. Rescue operations by fire services and diving teams are ongoing. The injured who swam ashore from the launch are admitted to various hospitals in Narayanganj and Munshiganj.
Meanwhile, the Narayanganj district administration has formed a 7-member investigation committee headed by the Additional District Magistrate in the launch sinking incident. The family of the deceased will be given 25 thousand rupees for burial. The injured are being treated at the hospital. About 20 people swam to the shore after sinking the launch. Efforts are being made to rescue the rest.
