8 years since Savar's Rana Plaza tragedy

The Dhaka Times Desk Today, April 24, marks 8 years since the Savar Bus Stand Rana Plaza collapse. On this day of 2013, April 24, the incident is seen as the biggest labor accident in the world.

One thousand 136 fresh lives were lost in that accident that day. More than 1500 people were injured. Those who survived are today living a dehumanized life with paralysis.

On the other hand, in 8 long years, out of four cases, only one case has been resolved. Apart from the case filed by the ACC against Rana and his mother on charges of concealment of assets, the remaining 3 cases are not facing settlement. Of which Rajuk's case of murder and construction law is yet to begin testimony.

It is known that the testimony of the two accused cannot be started due to the High Court's stay order. The state side is not able to take the testimony even though the witnesses are inquired about to testify. Testimony will be possible only if the suspension order is withdrawn.'

According to sources, Sohail Rana has acquired illegal assets inconsistent with the declared income of Tk 2 crore 28 lakh 43 thousand 793. He bought a little more than 10 percent of the land from Mosharraf Hossain, a doctor in Savar, for Tk 2 lakh and applied to build a 12-storey building in Savar Municipality. The construction of the building started in 2008. In 2013, the construction work up to the 8th floor was completed.

It is known that 4 more cases are pending against Sohail Rana. Sohel Rana is in jail in these cases. Sohail Rana was arrested by RAB in Benapole on April 29 after Rana Plaza collapsed on April 24, 2013.

Central Committee President of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation Rafiqul Sujan told a news media that no case has been settled in Rana Plaza in 8 years. He demanded speedy disposal of all cases including maximum punishment of Sohail Rana. He also demanded that April 24 should be declared National Workers' Mourning Day and rehabilitation of affected workers' families should be confiscated and all properties of Sohel Rana should be confiscated.
