The Dhaka Times Desk In August last year, a group of people kidnapped an Indian soldier in Indian-administered Kashmir. His family believes he may not be alive. So the soldier's father is still looking for his son's remains!
Manzoor Ahmed Waga was the first to hear that his son Shakir Manzoor had been kidnapped. A day later, the police found his car. His car was burnt to ashes. His light brown shirt and black T-shirt were found in an apple orchard about 9 miles from there. They were broken. There were patches of blood on it. Only that, then nothing else was found.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 2, 2020. 24-year-old Shakir Manzoor went home to his hometown Shopian for a short time to attend Eid celebrations. The place is at the foothills of the Himalayas, where a lot of apples are grown. Shakir Manzoor is a Kashmiri Muslim who served in the Indian Army.
His family says that on the day of the incident, Shakir was returning to his base and his car was stopped midway by separatist rebels. Some of them jumped into his car and then the car drove away, Shahnewaz Manzoor - Shakir's younger brother - was quoted as saying by an eyewitness.
Then nobody knows where the car goes. Shahnewaz Manzoor is a law student. He said he was returning home on his motorbike when he saw Shakir's car - coming from the opposite direction. He remembers that the car was filled with strangers.
'Where are you going?' Shahnewaz stopped the bike and shouted questions. 'Don't follow me,' replied his brother from the car. It has already been 9 months since the kidnapping of Shakir Manzoor. His father Manjoor is still searching for his son's body.
He starts his search from the village - where his tattered clothes are found. Another 50 km area around it where there are fruit orchards, small mountain rivers, thick forests and villages - everywhere he is desperately searching.
Shakir Manzoor's family often goes digging in various places in search of dead bodies. Shahnewaz also gave up going to college last year to help her father. They also hired excavators several times to dig some rivers. Sometimes our friends and neighbors also join us in the search with spades and shovels,' said Shahnewaz.
'My son gave his life for the country. If he has joined the militancy then the government can say it openly. If he was really killed by militants, why are they not recognizing his martyrdom?' He asked questions.
It should be noted that the sudden disappearance of people is not unusual in the turbulent situation of the long-standing insurgency against the Indian rule in Kashmir. Thousands of such people have become destitute in the last 20 years.
