14 and a half thousand crore compensation claim against TikTok

The Dhaka Times Desk Thousands of parents in the Netherlands have demanded compensation of around 14.5 billion rupees from the video platform TikTok.

According to Deutsche Welle, parents complain that TikTok is not working to protect children's privacy and security.

SOMI or The Market Information Research Foundation or SOMI filed a subpoena in an Amsterdam court on the matter last week. SOMI claims that they represent about 64,000 parents.

Since May 25, 2018, the loss of children has been determined by SOMI at Rs. For each child below 13 years of age, around Rs 2 lakh compensation is claimed. One lakh for 13 to 15 year olds and 50 thousand taka for 16 and 17 year olds have been demanded.

Somi's complaint against TikTok is that they are collecting information from minors to serve targeted ads without their permission. Somi's lawyer Duve Linders told a Dutch media outlet that Tiktik is collecting more data than necessary - a complete violation of EU law. "It is not at all clear how TikTok is using personal information," he said. Linders expressed concern that these data may be sent to the United States or China.

Another complaint is that TikTok encourages children to participate in dangerous challenges. Allegedly, a few children around the world have died while doing this. One such challenge is The Blackout Challenge. It's basically a competition to suffocate each other. It continues until one withdraws from this challenge.

Somi's lawyer, Linders, said such a risky challenge, while not fatal, could cause emotional and physical harm to children. Of course, long before the arrival of TikTok, news of such challenges spreading among children was sometimes heard.

Minors are required to obtain permission from their parents to open an account. Children under the age of 13 are generally not allowed to use TikTok. TikTok has also said that it is trying hard to protect children. For example, accounts for 13- to 15-year-olds are automatically set to 'private'. That's why no stranger can see children's videos.

TikTok moderators also remove inappropriate videos and suspend the accounts of such video creators. TikTok users can also report against any video they want. TikTok is owned by the Chinese internet company ByteDance. TikTok has around 700 million users worldwide.

It should be noted that in April last year, children's rights activists in Britain started almost the same legal process as in the Netherlands against TikTok. At the end of last month, the European Commission also announced a review of TikTok's business policies. Also, official discussions with TikTok have also started. In 2019, there was also an investigation against TikTok in the United States.
