The Dhaka Times Desk In an event organized at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2021, it was said that it is possible to reduce the total carbon emissions in the world by up to 20 percent through the use of ICT technology.
A special session titled 'Huawei Day Zero Green Forum' was held at 'MWC Barcelona 2021' this week, where David Lee, president of Huawei Western Europe, and others from the industry expressed their views. This year's discussion at the forum focused on the ICT sector's engagement with the EU Green Deal and the role of digital technologies in sustainable development, with case studies reviewing operators' green telecom network strategies and the challenges they face in achieving carbon neutrality.
Speaking at the event, Huawei Western Europe President David Lee said about how the ICT sector can contribute to customer service through green digital telecommunications services, “Through ICT solutions, we are helping other industries reduce their carbon footprint. We have named this ICT enabled process 'Carbon Handprint'. ICT sector carbon accounts for only two percent of total carbon emissions. But through the use of ICT technology, it is possible to reduce the world's total carbon emissions by up to 20 percent."
He also said that Huawei believes in watt management through Bit. Here, bit refers to the basic unit of digital information and watt refers to the basic unit of energy or fuel. That is, Watt Management by Bit refers to the management of energy in a more efficient way with the help of digital technology.
Others involved in the sector present at the event emphasized on the close involvement of ICT with the green plan of the region in their speech. Among them were – Member of European Parliament Susana Solis Perez, Steven Moore (Head of Climate, GSMA), Monica Sala (Chief Technology Officer, Orange Spain), Juan Manuel Caro Bernat (Director of Operational Transformation, Telefonica Group), Blanca Cenia (Managing Director, Vantage Towers Spain) and James Crawshaw (Principal Analyst of Service Provider Operations & IT, Omdia Informa Tech).
Telecom operators have long been seen as advocates of sustainable global development efforts. In 2016, the mobile sector became the first industry vertical to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. However, achieving the 'zero-carbon' goal still requires extensive network transformation by operators, and Huawei's recent statement reiterated that the company is committed to accelerating this process.
