The Dhaka Times Desk UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the lifting of US sanctions on Iran. He said that, 'I call on the United States to withdraw all the sanctions mentioned in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Along with this, there is also a call to fully return to the promise of this agreement with Iran. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made this call in a report sent to the Security Council last Wednesday.
The 15-member Security Council also discussed on Wednesday the re-implementation of the 2015 resolution in the Secretary-General's biennial report. The resolution also calls for upholding the nuclear deal signed between Iran, the United States, France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China.
Note that in 2015, Iran signed a nuclear agreement with 6 nations. Then in May 2018, the then US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the agreement. He then reimposed sanctions on Iran.
