The agency's spokesman, Ibrahim Ahmadov, said that some employees of their organization reported that a volcanic eruption had occurred on an uninhabited island in the Caspian Sea. An investigation is underway to fully confirm this. The fire was seen burning in the area till yesterday morning. However, no casualties have been reported so far in Sunday's explosion in the Caspian Sea.
At first, it was thought that there might have been an explosion in a gas or oil mine. But the oil and gas field is protected - after it was confirmed, experts began to think that a mud volcano, i.e. a small volcano, might have erupted there. Later, the administration of Azerbaijan informed that there was no explosion in the mine.
According to the Azerbaijan Meteorological Department, there are several mud volcanoes or small volcanoes on the surface. During an eruption there is first an explosion, then mud with lava starts to come out there. There are also such volcanoes at sea level. It is abundant in the Caspian Sea region. One such volcano has erupted. The explosion happened there.
Before this, a fire was seen burning in the middle of the ocean in the Gulf of Mexico. The fire was extinguished after more than 5 hours of efforts. The fire broke out last Friday near the Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico.
The country's national oil producer Pemex said the fire was caused by a gas leak in an undersea pipeline.
