The Dhaka Times Desk In commemoration of the 200th death anniversary of the great Napoleon, auction house Sotheby's (Paris branch) has organized an auction of various items used by him.
This auction started on 15th July and will continue till 22nd September with the 'Napoleon Bonaporte Bicorne' special hat.
The main attraction of the auction is this 'Napoleon's Bicorn Hat.' It is believed that he wore this hat when he defeated the Russian army at the Battle of Friedland in 1807. He also wore this cap during the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit after the victory. Whether Napoleon was actually a shrewd military strategist or a war-mongering ruthless dictator is still debated in the country. But Sotheby's says he was actually an emperor whose story continues to fascinate the world 200 years after his death.
According to The Guardian, the organizers said, 'At the auction, the hat could be sold for 4 lakh to 6 lakh euros (Tk 6.03 crore).'
According to history, this hat was bought from him in 1814 by then wealthy politician Sir Michael S'-Stuart. He is also known to have been somewhat hypnotized by Napoleon. Stewart took the hat back to his native Scotland. The hat has remained in his family's care for generations since then. So far, 19 bicorn hats worn by Napoleon have been identified.
Apart from the hat, the auction will also include a death mask made with the face of Napoleon's corpse. It is also expected to sell for 4 to 6 million euros. All in all, the auction will include sculptures, furniture, silverware, porcelain, jewellery, pictures, etc.
Note that Napoleon died at the age of 51. While in exile on the British island of St. Helena. His last words before dying were: France, l'arme, Josephine, tet d'arme, (France, the army, Josephine, chief of the army).
