The Dhaka Times Desk A trawler carrying hundreds of passengers sank in a collision with a trawler loaded with sand in Vijayanagar upazila of Brahmanbaria. 20 dead bodies have been recovered in this incident till 9:30 pm.
Many passengers are still missing. Many casualties are expected in this incident. This incident took place in Laiska Bill of Bhater Khala area on Simna-Brahmanbaria road of the upazila at around 5 pm on Friday (August 27).
The injured in the sinking of the trawler are being treated at the District Headquarters Hospital. However, the fire service has not started the rescue operation so far to rescue the injured.
Deputy Commissioner Hayat Ud Daula Khan and Superintendent of Police Md. Anisur Rahmar visited the spot. District Commissioner Hayat ud Daula Khan said that the family of the victims will be given 20,000 rupees on behalf of the district administration.
Eyewitnesses said that the trawler with more than a hundred passengers left for Anandabazar Ghat in Sadar Upazila from Champaknagar Ghat in Vijaynagar Upazila of the district. On the way, there was a collision with a sand laden trawler coming from the opposite direction in the Loiska Bill area. The passenger-laden trawler sank immediately. Rescue operations are underway.
