The rise of Mollah Mohammad Hasan Akhunde
Online Express Tribune published from Pakistan wrote that Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund is from Kandahar province. This province is the birthplace of the Taliban movement. From 1996 to 2001, he served as deputy foreign minister, deputy prime minister and governor of Kandahar in the government that was ruled by the Taliban.
He is also the co-founder of the Taliban movement. Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund was a close aide of Taliban founder late Mullah Omar.
He was educated in various religious institutions in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mollah Mohammad Hasan Akhund is believed to be between 60 and 70 years old.
On the other hand, in the sanctions announced against him by the European Union, he is mentioned as 76 years old.
Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund has long served as the head of the Taliban's powerful decision-making council, Rehbari Shura or Leadership Council. Analysts see him as a political figure. He has control over the Rehbari Shura. He also has the authority to make decisions on military matters.
Meanwhile, a Taliban source told Reuters news agency that Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund is very old. He is currently the oldest senior Taliban leader. He provides financial and logistical support to the Taliban movement. Besides, he has established contact with the officials of United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
A UN report on the siege described him as a close aide and political adviser to Mullah Omar. Moreover, Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund is highly respected among the Taliban. He is a close associate of Taliban Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada.
