The Dhaka Times Desk A school and two of its teachers have been sued for $1 million (about Tk 8.5 crore) in compensation and racial discrimination for cutting a girl's hair without parental permission.
The case was filed by the father of the 7-year-old child. The complaint of the parents is that the school authorities and the teacher violated the child's constitutional rights by cutting the hair.
The incident took place in Michigan, USA. The plaintiff in the case is Jimmy Hoffmeyer. He has already taken his daughter out of that school for cutting her hair. Jimmy told the AP news agency that one day last April, his daughter Jurni came home from school with a section of her hair cut off.
Two days later Jurni returned home with the hair cut on the other side of his head. Jimira thought, maybe a classmate had mischievously cut his hair this time. But when asked Jurni said that this time a teacher cut her hair.
Jurney's father recently filed a lawsuit against Mount Pleasant Public School and two of its teachers in federal court in West Michigan over the incident. It alleges racial discrimination, intimidation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, assault and battery, in addition to violation of the child's constitutional rights.
However, the school authorities investigated after the incident. It said that the teacher violated school rules but did not discriminate. He was reprimanded for that, but he lost his job. The school authorities are yet to comment on the case.
