The Dhaka Times Desk Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has said that if the internet service of the customer is stopped for 3 consecutive days, the service provider will not be able to collect any service fee or internet bill from the customer in that month.
This was informed in an instruction sent by BTRC to all Broadband Internet Service Providers (ISPs) last week. BTRC informed that the broadband internet service price has been announced under the 'One Country, One Rate' program launched on June 6. This time the standard of internet service has been announced.
The directive says that if the internet service is disconnected for a consecutive day, 50 percent of the total bill can be charged from the customer in that month. If there is no internet for 2 consecutive days, only 25 percent of the monthly bill can be taken. And if there is no internet for 3 days then no money can be taken from the customer in that month.
BTRC has also informed in the new instructions that the service providers can offer new packages. But it should be as per approved package and minimum speed limit of 5 Mbps must be fixed. Again approval is required for new packages. If you give any package beyond this, the commission will take action. Approved service charges must be published on the ISP's website. Customer complaints (including ticket number) should be resolved promptly and information should be stored for at least 6 months.
On the other hand, 3 packages were announced last June under the 'One Country, One Rate' programme. The price of the first package is a maximum of 500 taka per month, its speed will be 5 Mbps (Megabit per second). The price of the second package is 800 rupees per month and the speed will be 10 Mbps. And the third package has a speed of 20 Mbps, which costs a maximum of Tk 1,200 per month. Internet service should be provided at the same price in metropolis, district, upazila and union. This pricing is based on shared (1:8) bandwidth.
According to BTRC, broadband internet users in the country stood at 150,000 at the end of last August. BTRC feels that broadband internet connection has doubled during the Corona period.
