The Dhaka Times Desk Now the seventh season of T20 World Cup has been raised in the desert. The event was supposed to be held in India but is now being held in Oman and the United Arab Emirates due to Corona.
However, the host of the event is the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI). The last T20 World Cup was held in 2016.
T20 World Cup was supposed to be held in 2018. However, the event was eventually canceled for the ODI World Cup in 2019. Then it was supposed to be held in Australia in 2020 but it was postponed due to Corona. After five years, the seventh edition of T20 World Cup was held in the desert.
The auspicious start of the World Cup is the Al Amerat Stadium in Muscat, painted in T20 colours. It's like a dress around. There are two matches on the first day of the World Cup today (Sunday). Bangladesh host Oman and Papua New Guinea at 4pm. On the other hand, Bangladesh and Scotland will fight at 8 pm.
A total of 16 teams are participating in this year's event. There are 8 teams in two groups of qualifiers. Super Twelve has 8 teams in both groups.
Group 'A' will feature Sri Lanka, Ireland, Namibia and the Netherlands in the qualifiers. And Bangladesh is in 'B' group. Their opponents there are Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland.
Group-1 of Super Twelve consists of Australia, South Africa, England and defending champions West Indies. Group-II consists of India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Afghanistan.
The top two teams in the points table from the two qualifying groups will get tickets to play in the Super Twelve. That is why the Super Twelve will be held with a total of 12 teams. The main phase of the World Cup or what is called the Super Twelve will start from October 23. The battle of Super Twelve will end on November 8.
The top four teams in the points table in both groups of the Super Twelve will get tickets to the semi-finals. Two semi-finals will be held on November 10 and 11. The first semi-final will be held in Abu Dhabi, while the second will be held in Dubai.
The final will be played on November 14 in Dubai. The two winners of the two semi-finals will play in the final. A reserve-day is also kept for the finals.
West Indies have won the maximum two times in the previous 6 editions of the World Cup. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England have won the title once each.
