The Dhaka Times Desk Today is the sad 15th of August. Bengali's most heartbreaking and tragic day. 37 years ago on this day, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest son of Bengalis, the architect of independence, the father of the nation, was brutally killed.

Nation observes the day with deep respect today. Today is a public holiday. The national flag is kept at half-mast in government-semi-government, autonomous institutions. On the occasion of National Mourning Day, Awami League and its affiliated organizations have organized Milad Mahfil, Konan Khani and Shok sabha. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of National Mourning Day. They appealed to the people of the country to turn the grief of losing Bangabandhu into strength and build a golden Bengal.

President-Prime Minister pays tribute to Bangabandhu's portrait

On the occasion of the 38th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Mourning Day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to Bangabandhu's portrait at Road No. 32 in Dhanmondi in the morning.

At 6:30 in the morning, President Abdul Hamid paid tribute to the portrait of Bangabandhu with flowers. With this program, the program of August 15 officially started.

Then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to Bangabandhu's portrait. He first paid tribute to Bangabandhu as the head of the government and later as the party chief by placing flowers on his portrait. At that time, members of the cabinet, senior leaders of Awami League and the heads of the three forces were present.

After that, various affiliated organizations of Awami League paid tribute to the portrait of Bangabandhu. Besides, various social and cultural organizations also paid tribute to Bangabandhu's portrait.

After paying tribute at Dhanmondi, various organizations paid tribute by placing flowers on the graves of those who died on August 15 at the Banani graveyard. Later, prayers and prayers were offered for the souls of the deceased.

Looking back 1975

Even the worst murderer in the world will be shocked if he remembers the horrible incident that happened on August 15, 1975 at Bangabandhu's residence at 32 Dhanmondi. In a cowardly attack, the gang of assassins attacked Bangabandhu's residence in the dark of night. On that day, blood, brain and bone powder were scattered on the walls, window glass, floor and ceiling of every floor of that building. Blood flows throughout the house. The walls were also riddled with bullets. Household items were scattered around in a sea of blood. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, dressed in check lungi and white Punjabi, riddled by the assassin's bullets, lay frozen in the middle of the stairs of the first floor. His abdomen and chest were riddled with bullets. His broken glasses lay next to the frozen body. Sheikh Kamal, the telephone operator in the reception room, Begum Mujib in front of the main bedroom, Sultana Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, Rozi Jamal in the bedroom, Sheikh Nasser in the bathroom next to the stairs on the ground floor and two sisters in the main bedroom. Seeing the blood-soaked body of baby Russell wrapped in a lungi, no humanist in the world can find the language to express extreme hatred towards the murderers.

Bangabandhu had the firm belief that no Bengali could be a threat to his security in an independent country. That is why Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used to live in his beloved residence number 32 Dhanmondi instead of the official residence of the President. Bangabandhu loved this house, the cradle of the Bengali independence movement. From here, Bangabandhu was committed to building the war-torn country with all his might. That day Bangabandhu was fearless even in the face of the machine guns of the assassins. He asked, "Where do you want to take me?"

Along with Bangabandhu, Bangabandhu's wife Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Russell, daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal, Rozi Jamal, brother Sheikh Nasser and Colonel Jamil lost their lives that day. Bangabandhu's nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, his pregnant wife Arju Moni, brother-in-law Abdur Rob Serniabat, Shaheed Serniabat, Shishu Babu, Arif Rintu Khan and many others lost their lives in the bullets of the killers. Every year August 15 comes as a sigh of grief and sorrow in the hearts of Bengalis. Today is National Day of Mourning.

Bangabandhu's eldest daughter, current Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and youngest daughter Sheikh Rehana survived as they were not in the country that day. At that time the husband said. Sheikh Hasina was staying with Wazed Mia in Karlsruhe, Germany with her children. Sheikh Rehana was also with her elder sister.
