The Dhaka Times Desk The ferry sank in the river Padma at Paturia when it came to the very edge of the river. This incident was witnessed by many people on social media yesterday.
The most surprising thing is that the experts cannot believe that this ro ro ferry named Shah Amanat, weighing 806.60 tons and running at a speed of 10.25 nautical miles, will sink in normal waves. A launch sinks in a storm but a ferry sinks - an unheard of case. But the question has arisen that the ferries are very old and expired ferries, why do we have to run them?
However, it was found that the ferry was unfit for navigation. But the ferry was running dangerously. The question has arisen but why? So who will take responsibility for the sinking of the ferry?
According to those who were on the ferry, the ferry tilted to one side even in the middle of the river. According to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) vessel inventory, ferry Amanat Shah was built in 1980. When a privately owned launch sinks, the owner and Sareng are arrested. Now what action is being taken against those concerned after the horrific incident of Amatan Shah ferry? Although the Ministry of Shipping claims, the ferry has capsized!
Deputy General Manager of Aricha branch of BIWTC. Zillur Rahman told the media that the Ro-Ro Ferry Amanat Shah had loaded vehicles from Daulatdia Ghat and anchored at Paturia No. 5 Ferry Ghat. The ferry capsized shortly after 2/3 vehicles disembarked from the ferry. The ferry had a total of 17 vehicles. Among them, three trucks were able to get off.
Mainul Hossain, a transport worker at Paturia Ghat, said that usually the bottom of the ferry bursts and slowly sinks into the water. In that situation, 3 cargo trucks got off the ferry quickly in front of our eyes, but the rest of the cars couldn't get off. Within a few minutes, the ferry left from Daulatdia Ghat in Goland of Rajbari capsized at Ghat number 5 of Paturia in Manikganj.
Fire service is conducting a rescue operation in the case of Amanat Shah ro-ro ferry vehicle sinking at Ghat number 5 in Paturia of Manikganj. A few trucks have already been towed (yesterday). Rescue ship Hamza and 3 diving teams of Manikganj Fire Service are working till this report is written.
It is known that Ro-Ro ferry Shah Amanat sank with 14 trucks carrying cargo at Paturia Ghat in Manikganj for more than 40 years. Yesterday (Wednesday) around 9:30 am, this ferry sank at Ferry No. 5. The ferry capsized and partially sank at Paturia Ghat in Manikganj.
As per the Inland Navigation Ordinance, the validity of a vessel's registration is 30 years. The period of registration can then be extended twice to 5 years through special survey (fitness). However, after more than 40 years, no ship can operate in any way. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) could not stop it even if there is such a law.
Ferries of this model were mainly introduced during the British rule. Some of which are still plying the Padma River between Mawa in Munshiganj and Jazira in Shariatpur. But the question is how the expired ferry was moving? If this accident had happened in the middle of the river, there would have been an incident like loss of life. What were the officials of the government doing? Who will take the responsibility now? This question is common people.
Watch the full (5.32 seconds) video of how the Amanat Shah ro ro ferry came to a stop at the ghat and how it slowly sank.
