Refugee crisis: Asylum applications fall in Turkey

An annual report on migration flows in member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has been published. It said that the number of asylum applications in Turkey fell by 44.5 percent in 2020, but still remained at more than 31,000. The Stockholm Center for Freedom publishes this report.

According to the report entitled 'International Migration Outlook 2021', most of the applicants came from Afghanistan (23 thousand), Iraq (5 thousand 900) and Iran (1 thousand 400). This was reported by Turkey Minutes.

The migration of Turkish citizens to OECD countries increased by 2 percent to 70 thousand in 2019.

According to Eurostat, the number of asylum applications by Turkish citizens in EU countries increased by 494 percent in the last 12 years. However, only 2,815 Turks applied for asylum in EU countries in 2008. This number increased to 13 thousand 905 in 2020. In 2020, about 3.4 percent of applications to the EU were from Turkish citizens.

According to the report, migration flows to OECD countries fell by at least one-third in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Permanent immigration flows fell by at least 30 percent in the same year, to around 3.7 million. It was the lowest since 2003.

The number of new asylum applications in OECD countries fell by 31 percent in 2020. That is the lowest since the end of the Balkan crisis in the early 1990s. The report says that Venezuela will be the number one country in the number of asylum seekers for 2 years in a row. It is followed by Afghanistan and Syria.

Avoid using highly alkaline soaps or detergents.
