Record number of drug overdose deaths in the United States

The Dhaka Times Desk More than 100,000 people have died from drug overdoses in the United States. This information has emerged in a statistic from April 2020 to April this year.

This is the first time in the country's history that so many people have died due to drug use in just one year. Which is 28.5 percent more than the previous year.

Data released on November 17 showed that at least 1306 people in the United States died due to overdoses during that period. It is also said that opioids or opium-like drugs are most responsible for these deaths. Of the total deaths, 75 thousand 673 deaths are also caused by opioids.

According to statistics website Our World in Data, around 580,000 people have died in the United States due to the corona virus during the same period.

According to 2019 estimates, heart disease was the leading cause of death in the United States. That year, more than 660,000 people died of heart disease in the country. The second reason is that about 6 lakh people died of cancer. 1 lakh 70 thousand people died due to unintentional injuries.

Statistics also show that psychostimulants such as methamphetamine, as well as natural and semi-synthetic opioids (such as painkillers and cocaine), have increased overdose deaths.
