According to the highway police, drivers and victims, the reasons identified are vehicles breaking down on the roads, not making arrangements for the speedy removal of accident vehicles and debris, setting up of illegal market stalls on the highways, constructing link roads, bypass roads, excess vehicle pressure, drivers overtaking at will. , the tendency to drive ahead, stopping cars in the middle of the road and picking up and dropping passengers along with dangerous potholes on broken roads often cause traffic jams on the highways.
Apart from traffic mismanagement on the busiest highways, there are instances of vehicles getting stuck for hours due to extortion violence at various points. Because of these identified reasons, sometimes 70-80 km long traffic jams are blocked on roads and highways, thousands of passengers suffer day and night. However, it has been alleged that no initiative is taken to remove the mismanagement. After the Eid holidays, the vehicles coming towards Dhaka have been suffering from unbearable traffic jams on various highways for three days. Passengers are suffering endlessly in the continuous traffic jam of about 80 km long on Dhaka-Tangail highway and 50-60 km long stop-and-go traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong road. Due to which there is additional pressure on the railways. We have to risk our lives on the roof of the train for the past three days.
Officials of the Highway Police said that due to continuous rain, road accidents and confusion of cargo trucks, the two highways connecting the capital with the northern and southern towns have been severely congested. Jobaidul Alam, OC of Dhaka-Tangail-Yamuna Bridge Highway Police, Gogai Police Station, said, 'Vehicle movement was already disrupted due to continuous rain since Thursday night. After 11 pm, the situation became critical. In this, vehicles are moving very slowly from Elenga in Tangail to Chandra in Gazipur due to vehicle breakdown at various places. Besides, the traffic pressure was excessive after the Eid holiday and strike. As a result, it becomes impossible to deal with the pressure of traffic jam.
The drivers of various vehicles traveling from Dhaka to North Bengal via Jamuna Bridge said that traffic was stopped for a long time due to the train movement at the Dherua railway crossing of Mirzapur Upazila. Railgates are left open for several minutes before the train arrives and for several minutes after the train departs. There are big holes on the railway line. Due to this, the normal movement of vehicles is severely disrupted. Month after month everyone sees the huge problem of traffic due to this dangerous pothole, but no one is taking initiative to remove it.
Both parties avoid responsibility!
Officials of the Roads and Highways Department of Mirzapur said that the railway department is responsible for repairing potholes on the railway line. But an engineer of the railway east zone said that there is no disruption to the railway movement due to that pothole, so the railway has no responsibility to repair the slippery road there. However, because of the hole in the railway line, traffic jams are often created on the 22 km road from Shubhulya in Mirzapur to Chandra in Gazipur.
On the other hand, Chandra Trimor is used as a means of transportation for thousands of workers of more than three hundred industrial factories in Kaliakair upazila. As a result, there is always traffic jam and crowding. In Konabari, when it rains, the highway turns into arable land in some places including Konabari, Mauchak and Chandra. Vehicles have to move very carefully and slowly to cross the broken, potholed road. Otherwise, the car gets caught in an accident on the slippery road with mud and water. Bhogra Bypass Junction, Chandana-Chaurasta and Tongir Station Road areas of Gazipur are also experiencing stop-and-go traffic jams. As a result, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway is often experiencing severe traffic jams. Commuters traveling on the Dhaka-Chittagong road suffer the most in terms of traffic jams on the highway. Commuters on this road often face 50-60 km long traffic jams. Even if a car breaks down somewhere on the highway, there is precedent for 40-50 km of traffic jam. An official of the Bhulta police station of the highway police said that basically, when a car breaks down on the road or suffers an accident, no crane is readily available to remove the car from the road quickly. Delays in moving vehicles lead to long traffic jams.
The officials of the traffic department of that area should be more diligent. The law enforcement agencies should take urgent measures so that no accident-prone vehicle can remain on the road for a long time. Moreover, several important decisions have to be taken including construction of short flyovers at link road points. Because everyone knows that every year when Eid comes, there is a jam in this area. But still why special measures are not taken is the question of the people.
