The Dhaka Times Desk The court sentenced 20 people to death and 5 to life imprisonment for the beating death of the much-discussed Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.
Judge Abu Jafar Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal No. 1 announced the judgment of this much-discussed case today (Wednesday) afternoon.
Earlier, November 28 was fixed as the date of verdict. However, the judge fixed December 8 as the date could not be prepared. Earlier on November 14, after presenting the arguments of the state and the accused, the court fixed November 28 to announce the verdict.
A total of 47 people have testified in this case. In January last year, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) of Dhaka also ordered the transfer of the case to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court for trial. Then the Metropolitan Sessions Judge ordered the case to be sent to the speedy trial tribunal 1.
On March 14, Judge Abu Jafar Md. In Kamruzzaman's court, 22 accused claimed their innocence in the defense hearing.
On November 13, 2019, Detective Police (DB) inspector and investigation officer of the case, Wahiduzzaman, accused 25 people and submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court. It states that out of the 25 people, 19 have been identified and prima facie evidence of the involvement of 6 others based on circumstantial evidence.
A total of 22 accused were arrested, including 17 out of 19 people on the list and 5 out of 6 people who were not included in the list. Three people are absconding. 60 witnesses have been named in the charge sheet and 21 evidence and 8 seizure lists have been submitted to the court.
The accused in the statement are Mehdi Hasan Russell, Anik Sarkar, Ifti Mosharraf Saqal, Mehdi Hasan Rabin, Meftahul Islam Zion, Khandaker Tabakhkharul Islam Tanveer, Muntasir Alam Jamie, Mujahidur Rahman, Muhtasim Fuad, Moniruzzaman Monir, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Akash Hossain, Majedul. Islam, Shamim Billah, Moaz Abu Huraira, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Morsheduzzaman Jisan and Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim.
Apart from the statement, the 6 accused are - Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna, Amit Saha, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Mizanur Rahman alias Mizan, SM Mahmud Setu and Mostaba Rafid.
Absconding are Morsheduzzaman Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim and Mostaba Rafid. Among them, the first two are accused.
It is to be noted that on the night of October 6, 2019, Abrar was called from his room by some leaders and activists of BUET branch Chhatra League. They were accused of taking Abrar to room number 2011 and beating him to death. Later, at three o'clock in the night, the police recovered his body from the stairs of Sher Bangla Hall. Abrar's father, Barkat Ullah, filed a murder case against 19 people as a plaintiff in this incident on October 7 of that year at Chawkbazar police station in the capital. After that, the police arrested 22 people. 8 of them have given a confessional statement in court.
Abrar was a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of BUET. Abrar lived in room number 1011 of Sher Bangla Hall.
