Abdul Aziz, who received the New Zealand Cross, went to Linwood Mosque to pray with his son. The gunman attacked Linwood after the attack in Christchurch. After firing indiscriminately, he came to the car and took another gun.
At this time, Abdul Aziz got a credit card machine near his hand and ran towards the gunman shouting with it. He hid behind a car when the gunman opened fire. Aziz picked up the gun dropped by the gunman and fired and saw that it was empty. He also tried to distract the gunman by shouting from behind the car.
He then used the gun to break the rear window of the attacker's car. The assailant fled the scene in a vehicle in the face of resistance.
In 1999, the highest gallantry award, the New Zealand Cross, was introduced. Only two people have received this award before. Eight other people were given various bravery awards for their bravery during the Christchurch mosque attack. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the act of bravery as selfless and unique.
