Tanaka turned 116 years old in 2019. It was then that he was recognized as the oldest person by the Guinness Book of Records. When he reached 117 years and 261 days in September 2020, he was recognized as Japan's oldest ever.
A record was released by the country's Ministry of Health on the occasion of the annual Respect for the Aged Day in September. It says that a record 86,510 people lived to be a hundred years or more. This number is 6060 more than the previous year. However, most of the centenarians are women. According to the country's ministry, the total number of such men is slightly more than 10,000.
It is known that Tanaka is the seventh among 9 siblings. He got married at the age of 19. Her husband owned a noodle shop. He also helped run it. In 1937, his eldest son joined the Second Sino-Japanese War. His great-grandson, Izzy, is currently 62 years old.
