All of them were immigrants. Luigi Patronaggio, the prosecutor of Agrigento on the southern coast of Sicily, Italy, announced this information in a statement on Tuesday (January 25).
The statement added that the coast guard spotted the migrants floating in a boat about 18 miles or 29 kilometers off the coast of Lampione, an uninhabited island near Lampedusa. Then an operation was carried out to rescue them. The bodies of 7 Bangladeshis were found among the migrants in the boat.
Lampedusa Mayor Salvatore Martello confirmed the news of the death of 7 Bangladeshis and said that there were more than 280 migrants on that boat. Most of them are citizens of Bangladesh and Egypt.
Italy is one of the main routes for thousands of asylum seekers and migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe.
According to Italian official data, at least 1,751 migrants have arrived at various Italian ports from the beginning of this year to Monday.
