The Dhaka Times Desk The court awarded the death sentence to the then Inspector Liaquat Ali and the former OC Pradip Kumar Das of Teknaf Baharchhara Police Investigation Center for the shooting death of retired Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan.
Today (Monday) at noon Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail announced the verdict of this case. On January 12, the court fixed the date of the verdict.
15 accused in the case were brought to the court from the prison in a prison van around 2 pm today. The judge pronounced the verdict in front of them.
At the beginning of the 300-page verdict, Judge Mohammad Ismail said that Major Sinha's murder was premeditated. The active role of accused Liaquat Ali and Nanddulal in the murder has been proved.
On this day, the plaintiff in the case and Major Sinha's elder sister Sharmin Shahria Ferdous came to Cox's Bazar from Dhaka with her mother Nasima Akhter to hear the verdict in the son's murder case.
The trial of this case started on 27 June last year (2021) with the filing of charges against 15 accused including Pradeep. Of the 83 witnesses in the charge sheet, 65 were accepted.
Before that, the investigating officer and Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of RAB-15, Mohammad Khairul Islam, filed the charge sheet in the court on December 13, 2020 after nearly 4 months of investigation. It referred to the killing of Major Sinha as a planned incident.
A few days after the murder, on August 5, Sinha's elder sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a murder case in the Cox's Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court. 9 people including OC Pradeep Kumar Das were accused. Later, after the investigation, 6 more people were newly accused.
Apart from suspended OC Pradeep and Inspector Liaqat Ali, Pradeep's bodyguard Rubel Sharma, suspended Sub-Inspector (SI) Baharchra Police Investigation Center Nandulal Rakshit, suspended Constables Safanur Karim, Kamal Hussain and Abdullah Al Mamun, suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Liton Mia, Dismissed Constable Sagar Deb, Dismissed APBN Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Shahjahan, dismissed constable. Rajeev and Md. Abdullah
In addition, Nurul Amin of Marishbunia village of Shamlapur, Baharchhara Union of Teknaf, a witness of the police case filed at Teknaf police station, was also accused. Nezamuddin and Ayazuddin.
It is to be noted that on the night of July 31, 2020, Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was brutally killed by the police at the Shamlapur checkpoint on the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road.
After the incident, the police claimed that the former army officer was going to Cox's Bazar from Teknaf with a companion in his private car. When the police stopped the car at the check post and wanted to search it, he refused. At one stage of the argument, the army officer tried to take out the pistol he was carrying. Then the police shot him in self-defense.'
The police also claimed that 50 pieces of Yaba tablets, some ganja and two bottles of foreign liquor were found after searching the former army officer's car. Police also registered 3 cases after the incident.
However, the family of the deceased did not find such strange claims of the police credible. They claimed from the beginning that Sinha was killed 'intentionally'. Later, the investigation of the high-level committee formed for the investigation also revealed all the issues related to the incident.
Meanwhile, among the 15 defendants in the case, the court sentenced 6 defendants including Danddulal to life imprisonment except Liaquat and Pradeep. On the other hand, the court acquitted a total of 7 people including 3 people from APBN.
