The cucumber that is available in the market is not that kind of cucumber. It is not born in a loft or land, this cucumber grows under the sea, which is also known as 'Sea Cucumber'. Although known as 'Sea Cucumber', it is actually a marine organism. This organism is mainly found in the Munnar creek between India and Sri Lanka.
There is a huge demand and price of this sea cucumber in the international market. There is huge smuggling of this marine life from Munnar Creek. This is because these marine organisms are used to make aphrodisiacs, cancer treatments, oils, creams and cosmetics. Apart from medicine, expensive recipes of this organism have been developed in several countries of Southeast Asia including China. Sea cucumber is an organism of the genus Echinoderm. The shape is more like a tube. It looks like a cucumber. Hence its name 'Sea Cucumber'. Its food is small creatures hidden in the sand under the sea. Its body is very soft and fluffy. This organism also has a special role on the marine ecosystem. Its droppings contain nitrogen, ammonia and calcium which are known to be very beneficial for coral reefs.
This species is becoming extinct due to poaching. The price of this sea cucumber has increased manifold in 41 years. In 1980, the price of this cucumber was 5 thousand rupees per kg. Currently it has increased to 21 thousand. However, there are some special types of cucumbers that cost more than two and a half lakh per kg!
