The Dhaka Times Desk Former President and Chief Justice Sahabuddin Ahmed passed away. The 92-year-old former president passed away on Saturday (March 19) at 10:30 am at Dhaka's CMH due to old age.
In a separate condolence message on the death of former President and Chief Justice Sahabuddin Ahmed, the President has expressed deep grief and sorrow. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In his condolence message on Saturday, the President sought peace for the soul of Justice Sahabuddin Ahmed and expressed his deepest condolences to his bereaved family.
In a separate condolence message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought forgiveness for the soul of Justice Sahabuddin Ahmed and expressed her deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.
After his retirement from the presidency in 2001 and the death of his wife (in 2018), Sahabuddin Ahmad lived a very private life at the Gulshan residence. Two sons also lived in the same house with him. Also his two daughters are currently in USA and UK. The eldest of their 5 children. Sitara Parveen was a teacher in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University. Who died in a road accident on June 23, 2005 in the United States.
It is noted that he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh on 14 January 1990. On December 6 of that year, in the face of the anti-Ershad mass movement, the then Vice President Maudud Ahmad resigned and Justice Sahabuddin Ahmad was appointed as the Vice President. On the same day, President Ershad resigned and handed over power to Vice President Sahabuddin Ahmed. That is why he is acting as the head of the government. After a general election was held in the country under his leadership in February 1991, he was widely praised at home and abroad.
According to the demand of Sahabuddin Ahmad, the eleventh amendment of the constitution of the country was brought. That is why he returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice on October 10, 1991 and retired from the post of Chief Justice on February 1, 1995.
Sahabuddin Ahmed came to state power again in 1996 after Awami League came to power. After 21 long years, Awami League came to power that year and elected him as the president as a person acceptable to everyone. On 9 October 1996, he was sworn in as the President-elect. He retired as President on 14 November 2001.
