The Dhaka Times Desk 11 prominent women and three organizations received the 'Basis Luna Shamsuddoha Award 2022' for their contributions in various fields of society.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), the apex organization of the country's information technology sector, introduced this award for the first time to recognize the participation of women in the workplace and the role of women in society.
This award was officially given yesterday Sunday (March 20) at the Radisson Hotel in the capital. This year, 11 distinguished women were awarded for their special contribution in their respective fields. Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury, Chairman of GraphicPeople and Adcom Limited and former Caretaker Government Industry Advisor, has been given the Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding achievements in her personal life and encouraging millions of women in the workplace in Bangladesh.
The awardees are:
1. Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury, Chairman of GraphicPeople and Adcom Limited and former Industry Advisor to the Caretaker Government.
2. Prime Minister's Office SDG Affairs Chief Coordinator (Senior Secretary Rank) Juena Aziz.
3. Sayeda Muna Tasnim is a professional diplomat and High Commissioner of Bangladesh High Commission in UK.
4. Bangladesh Police Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Amena Begum.
5. Biochemical scientist, geneticist and professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Dhaka University. Hasina Khan.
6. Sonia Bashir Kabir is the founder and managing director of SBK Tech Ventures and SBK Foundation.
7. Roshan Ara Khanam, Consultant, Department of Respiratory Medicine, United Hospital.
8. Trust Bank Limited Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Humaira Azam.
9. BRAC Enterprise Managing Director Tamara Hasan Abed.
10. Director and scientist of Child Health Research Foundation Bangladesh. Sejunti Saha
11. Sifat Sarwar, co-founder and consultant of ShopUp.
Genex Infosys in the BPO Company category, BJIT in the Software Development Organization category and social enterprise 'Dnet' in male to female ratio were also awarded among BASIS member companies.
BASIS said, BASIS will give this award every year from now on, remembering the special contribution of Luna Shamsuddoha, the leading entrepreneur of Bangladesh's information technology sector and former chairman of Dohatech New Media.
The Speaker of the National Assembly was present as the chief guest. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. Minister of Education was present as a special guest. Dipu Moni, Prime Minister's Private Sector and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman and Minister of State for Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak.
Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Lily Nicholls, Swiss Ambassador Nathalie Chuard, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited Managing Director Rupali Chowdhury, Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (BELA) Executive Director Syeda Rizwana Hasan among others were present as guests of honor in the event presided over by BASIS President Russell T Ahmed. Also, women from different sectors of the country participated in this event. A panel discussion on 'Women's contribution and participation in the economy' was also held there.
It should be noted that the leading entrepreneur of the information technology sector of Bangladesh, Luna Shamsuddoha, was the chairman of Dohatech New Media, a software company. She served as the first woman chairman of Janata Bank Limited among the state-owned banks in Bangladesh and was also the founding president of Bangladesh Women in Technology (BWIT). He also serves as the Director of the Executive Committee of BASIS. He died on 17 February 2021. BASIS introduced the 'BASIS Luna Samsuddoha Award' from this year in recognition of special contributions to the IT sector of Bangladesh. Newly elected BASIS President Russell T Ahmed announced the launch of the award on his first day of assuming office.
