The Dhaka Times Desk Most of the planets we know are spherical like Earth. Only Jupiter is exceptional in this regard but not very different. But are all the planets in the solar system spherical? Answer - no.
According to media reports, a recent study found some planets to be exactly like potatoes. Researchers recently discovered one such planet, WASP-103b, about 1,500 light-years away from Earth. The size of which is like a potato or a rugby ball.
Why this strange shape?
According to astronomers, WASP-103b is located right around an F-type star. Which is bigger and more massive than our Sun. On the other hand, it is about one and a half times larger than Jupiter in size. Its proximity to the nearest star is thought to be responsible for the planet's unusual shape.
According to a study published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, WASP-103b is only 20,000 miles away from its nearest star. On the other hand, the distance between the Earth and the Sun is about 93 million miles.
Earth takes one year to orbit the Sun and other planets in the solar system. It takes at least a few months or a few years for the sun to complete one revolution. In contrast, some exoplanets, known as 'hot Jupiters', orbit their host stars within days or hours. Note that the orbital period of WASP-103b is only 22 hours.
Jack Lasker, who is a co-author of this research team, said in a statement, "This is an incredible thing!" Eventually Cheops was able to reveal this minor distortion.
The researchers drew on data from ESA's Cheops satellite, as well as NASA's Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes.
