The mosque that you can see is the oldest historical Varuna Mosque in Moulvibazar which is 400 years old. This is the oldest mosque still standing.
An approximately 400-year-old historic Jame Masjid is located in Varuna village, a beautiful natural beauty spot under Kalapur Union No. 5 of Srimangal Upazila of Moulvibazar district. Although there is disagreement about the construction of the mosque, the local people of the area, after testing the mosque by a skilled engineer, found out that the mosque was established approximately 400 years ago, i.e. 1000 Bengali in the year 1593. That year is also written on the main gate of the mosque.
Built on about 60 percent land, the mosque has 4 Viratakas at the four corners and 8 pillars on the verandah and 3 spectacular domes on top of the mosque. The length of the mosque is about 80 feet, width about 70 feet, walls 4 feet wide. There are 3 doors to enter the mosque and only two windows on either side. About 700 worshipers can pray together in this mosque.
According to local sources, terracotta, lime, brick etc. have been used in the construction style and infrastructure of the mosque. But the thing is, no rod was used in the construction of the mosque!
In 2016, a beautiful minaret of about 50 feet length was constructed at the entrance of the mosque under the supervision of the mosque authorities. The mosque is surrounded by greenery and various fruit trees. In front of the mosque is the central Shahi Eidgah Maidan at Virataka. Where 2 to 3 thousand Muslims can offer Eid prayers together. There is also Sundar Pukurghat in the historic building behind the mosque.
