Short story: Black is the light of the world

My mother has already said that my wife looks black, my wife should not forget to go to my younger sister's room in the morning. My younger sister is 7 months pregnant. So that the daughter should not be neglected in this situation, the mother has brought the younger sister to her.

That morning, he woke up hearing the screams of his younger sister. I quickly went to my sister's room. I thought that the sister did not have any problem again. I went to the room and saw my younger sister saying to my wife.
“তোমাকে না বলেছি সকাল সকাল আমার রুমে না আসতে। সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠে তোমার চেহাটা দেখলেই আমার মেজাজ খারাপ হয়ে যায়।”

আমি আমার ছোট বোনকে বললাম, “তোর রুমে এসেছে বলে কি হয়েছ? তাছাড়া আমার বউয়ের চেহারার মাঝে কি এমন আছে যার জন্য তোর মেজাজ খারাপ হয়ে যায়?”

ছোটবোন কিছু না বলে চুপ হয়ে আছে। অন্য রুম থেকে তখন মা এসে বললেন, “সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠে অলক্ষ্মীর চেহারা দেখলে কার মেজাজ ভালো থাকে? আমার মেয়েটার কয়েকদিন পর বাচ্চা হবে। মেয়েদের বাচ্চা হবার আগে যার চেহারা বেশি বেশি দেখবে বাচ্চা তার মতই হবে। আমি চাই না আমার মেয়ের সন্তান তোর বউয়ের মত হোক। দুনিয়ার সব মানুষ তো তোর মত বোকা না যে কালো চামড়ার মেয়ে বিয়ে করবে।”

আমি আমার মাকে কিছু না বলে বোনের দিকে তাকিয়ে বললাম, “আমাদের মা না হয় স্বল্প শিক্ষিতা, তাই এইসব কুসংস্কার বিশ্বাস করে। কিন্তু তুই তো ইন্টার পর্যন্ত পড়াশোনা করেছিস তোর কি এইসব জিনিস বিশ্বাস করতে হয়?” এই কথাটা বলে আমি যখন আমার রুমে আসলাম তখন আমার স্ত্রী আমার দিকে হাসি হাসি মুখে তাকিয়ে বললো,
“আজ দুপুরে কি রান্না করবো?”

I was very surprised to see his smiling face. A little while ago, the girl who was insulted by my mother and sister, still has a smile on her face! Maybe he is acting like a fake smile because he is in great pain.

আমি আমার স্ত্রীর হাতটা ধরে বললাম, “আমার মা বোনের কথায় খুব কষ্ট পেয়েছো তাই না?”
আমার স্ত্রী হেসে বললো, “একদম না। এইসব কথায় তো আমি অনেক আগে থেকেই অব্যস্ত।”

–মানে!
আমার স্ত্রী তখন বললো, “আপনাকে ছোট তিনটা ঘটনা বলি। কলেজে পড়া অবস্থায় অন্য সবার মতো আমারও ইচ্ছে হতো সাজতে। তো পাহেলা ফাল্গুনের দিন আমিও সবার মতো শাড়ি পরলাম। সবার মত আমিও সাজলাম। বাহিরে বের হওয়ার জন্য যখন বাসা থেকে বের হলাম, তখন পাশের বাসার আন্টি আমার দিকে আড়চোখে তাকিয়ে বলেছিলো “যতই মেকাপ করো না কেন কালো কাক কখনো সাদা বক হতে পারে না!”

একবার কয়েকজন বান্ধবী মিলে রেস্টুরেন্টে খেতে গেলাম। বান্ধবীরা যখন সমানে সেলফি তুলছিলো তখন আমিও চেয়েছিলাম সেলফি তুলতে। তখন এক বান্ধবী আমায় বলে বসলো, “তুই সেলফির ভিতর থাকলে পুরো সেলফিটাই নষ্ট হয়ে যাবে।”

এরপর আর কখনো সেলফি তোলার ইচ্ছে হয় নি। কারণ কালো মেয়েদের সেলফি তুলতে নেই…
দেখতে কালো বলে একের পর এক পাত্রপক্ষ যখন বিয়ের জন্য না করে দিচ্ছিলো তখন আমার নিজের মা বলেছিলো, ” এই অলক্ষ্মী মেয়েকে জন্ম দিয়ে আমি ভুল করেছি। এই অলক্ষ্মী মেয়ে মরেও না।”

নিজের বাবা বলেছিলো, “এই কপালপুড়ি আমার চোখের সামনে যেন না আসে।”
Where my own birth mother can call me Alakshmi, why should it hurt if my next mother calls me Alakshmi? Where my biological father does not want to see my face, I should not suffer if your sister does not want to see my face.”

After saying the words, my wife wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, but the smile was still on her face. I could understand how much pain was hidden in this smile.

দেড়মাস পরের ঘটনা, আমার বোনের শরীরের অবস্থা হঠাৎ খারাপ হয়ে যায়। ডাক্তারের কাছে নিয়ে গেলে ডাক্তার বলেন, “এখনি সিজার করতে হবে, তা না হলে পেটের বাচ্চার ক্ষতি হবে।” ডাক্তার আমার বোনকে অপারেশন থিয়েটারে নিয়ে যাওয়ার আগে বললেন, তাড়াতাড়ি ও-নেগেটিভ রক্তের ব্যবস্থা করতে। আমরা আগে থেকে যে ডোনারের সাথে কথা বলে রেখেছিলাম তাকে যখন ফোন দেই রক্তের জন্য তখন সে বলে, আমরা কেন তাকে আগে ভাগে জানাইনি? সে এই মুহুর্তে ঢাকার বাহিরে আছে।

আমরা সবাই যখন ও-নেগেটিভ রক্তের জন্য ছুটোছুটি করছিলাম, সেটা আমার স্ত্রী জানতে পেরে বাসা থেকে আমায় ফোন দিয়ে বললো,রক্তের জন্য চিন্তা না কারতে। কারণ ওর রক্তের গ্রুপ ও-নেগেটিভ। ও এখনি হাসপাতালে আসছে। আমি ফোন রেখে আমার মায়ের কাছে গেলাম। মা তখন ঈশ্বরকে ডাকছেন আর কান্নাকাটি করছেন। আমি মায়ের পাশে বসতে বসতে বললাম, “মা, রক্ত দেওয়ার মতো মানুষ পাওয়া গেছে, কিন্তু সমস্যা হলো লোকটা কালো। কালো মানুষের শরীর থেকে রক্ত নেওয়া কি উচিত হবে? পরে যদি বাচ্চা কালো হয়?”

Mother looked at me with angry eyes and said, what is the difference between black people and fair people in blood? Just as fair people's blood is red, black people's blood is also red. Besides, who told you the nonsense that if blood is taken from the body of a black person, the baby will be black?"

I quietly left in front of my mother without saying anything. The next morning I noticed my mother sitting with my niece in her lap. The sister is lying on the next bed. I said to my mother with a smile.

“আচ্ছা মা, রক্তে যদি ফর্সা কালোর কোন ভেদাভেদ না থাকে তাহলে চামড়ায় কেন এতো ভেদাভেদ? কালো মানুষের রক্ত শরীরে নিতে সমস্যা নেই অথচ কালো মানুষের চেহারা দেখলেই মেজাজ খারাপ হয়ে যায় কেন? মা কখনো চামড়া দেখে মানুষকে বিবেচনা করতে নেই বরং চামড়ার ভিতরে থাকা মানুষটাকে দেখে বিবেচনা করতে হয়। আপনাদের এত অপমানের পরেও আমার স্ত্রী মনে একটুকু রাগ ও পুষে রাখে নি, বরং বিপদের সময় নিজের শরীরের রক্ত দিয়ে আমার বোনকে বাঁচিয়েছে।”

মা আমার কথা শুনে নিরব হয়ে আছেন। আমি তখন পাশে শুয়ে থাকা ছোট বোনকে বললাম, “যে মানুষটা তোর এত অপমান সহ্য করার পরেও তোকে বাঁচাতে সাহায্য করেছে তাকে সম্মান দিতে না পারলেও কখনো অপমান করিস না বোন।” হঠাৎ খেয়াল করি দরজার পাশে আমার স্ত্রী দাঁড়িয়ে।

ছোটবোন আমার স্ত্রীকে দেখে বললো, ‘ভাবী, তুমি দূরে দাঁড়িয়ে আছো কেন? কাছে এসে আমার মেয়েটাকে একটু কোলে নাও। আর শুনো আমার মেয়ের নাম কিন্তু তোমায় ঠিক করে দিতে হবে।”

As soon as I took the baby in my arms, my wife cried. Seeing my wife's cry, my mother and sister also cried. I came out of the cabin without standing any more to the joyous union of mothers and daughters' cries. Unknowingly, a tear has accumulated in my eyes.
