The Dhaka Times Desk Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have been invited to the G-20 summit of the world's industrialized nations.
Indonesia's President Joko Widado said this in a tweet on Friday (April 29). Al Jazeera gave this information in a report.
"I have invited both President Putin and President Zelensky," Widado said.
Indonesia is the host country of the G-20 conference to be held in November. The conference will be held in the tourist island of Bali.
Although Russia is a member of the G20, Ukraine is not yet a member of this alliance. However, due to the war in Ukraine, the country's president has been invited as a special consideration, officials from the Indonesian presidential office told AFP.
They told AFP that since the start of the war in Ukraine, Indonesia had been heavily pressured by the US and its allies not to invite Russia to the conference. However, it is said from the side of the Indonesian government that as the host country of the conference, Indonesia must have a neutral role. Since Russia is a member of the G-20 alliance, it is impossible not to invite Russia.
Following Indonesia's response, US President Joe Biden recommended inviting Ukraine to the conference. It was on his recommendation that Ukraine was invited.
