The President's spokesperson said that due to the strike by workers and common people, shops and public transport were also stopped. President Gotabaya decided to impose emergency laws to ensure public order.
Thousands of people went on strike yesterday (May 6) in other cities besides the country's capital, Colombo. The protesters have been demanding his immediate resignation, blaming the Gotabaya government for Sri Lanka's economic crisis. The country's security forces fired water cannons and tear gas when a group of angry students tried to surround the parliament building. During this time, there was a chase between the two parties. Many schools, colleges and businesses have been closed due to the strike that started on Friday.
The agitators created barricades at various places and obstructed traffic. Due to the suspension of public transport, the suffering of common people has reached the extreme. A statement on Friday said that the declared state of emergency will come into effect from midnight.
It should be noted that after gaining independence in 1948, Sri Lanka is going through an extreme economic crisis. Anti-government protests have been going on intermittently in various parts of the country for more than a month due to shortage of imported food, fuel and medicines. This week, the country's finance minister said that Sri Lanka has only 50 million US dollars in reserves to use. Despite this, the country's president is not resigning.
