The death toll in the fire at the container depot in Sitakunda is 18 so far

The Dhaka Times Desk The death toll in the BM Container Depot in Chittagong's Sitakunda has increased to 18 so far. 5 fire service personnel were killed in the incident.

At least 400 people were injured in this incident. Among the casualties are depot workers as well as police and fire service personnel. 21 fire service personnel and 10 police personnel were injured.

Yesterday Saturday (June 4) around 11:00 p.m., the fire incident took place at the BM Container Depot in Bhatiari area of Sitakunda Upazila. 24 units of fire service are working to bring the fire under control.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed grief over this incident.

In this incident, the injured are being treated in different wards of Chittagong Medical. Due to excess patient pressure, treatment is being provided on the hospital floor in addition to the wards. Treatment is also being provided at other hospitals in the city and at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH). A heartbreaking situation took place at Chittagong Medical College Hospital at night. Ambulance, CNG and private cars started bringing the injured one after another. At this time, the TV announced repeatedly for all the doctors of Chittagong to attend the hospital to treat the injured.

Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Ilyach Chowdhury told the media, initially I thought the injured would be like 150 people. But the injured are much more. Many doctors have already arrived here. We have invited others to come too. All the doctors and nurses of the hospital are engaged in the service of the patients. We are trying to reduce the crowd and give first aid at the beginning.

Eyewitnesses reported that the container exploded after it caught fire. Due to the effect of the chemicals there, the fire spread quickly. There were at least 50,000 containers at the depot at this time.

Officer-in-Charge (Media Cell) of Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters. Shahjahan Shikder told the media that the fire was reported at 11:25 pm on Saturday. On getting the information, 8 units and later 16 more units reached and are trying to control the fire.

After the fire spread from one container to another at around 11:15 pm, there was a loud explosion in a container containing chemicals. Residents told the media that the explosion shook the area around four kilometers from the scene, the windows of the nearby houses were also broken.
