The Dhaka Times Desk The flood situation worsened in Sylhet and Sunamganj. The flood situation has taken a more dire shape as the water levels of rivers and streams continue to rise due to hill slopes and heavy rains.
Around 40 lakh people are trapped in water in different areas of Sylhet-Sunamganj districts. Those concerned said that this is the worst flood in the memory of Sylhet region.
There was a wail among the water-bound people. Thousands of people are running through the water stream in search of shelter. Children and the elderly are most at risk. The trapped people are being rescued and taken to shelters. People are taking shelter wherever dry and high ground is available.
All upazilas and half the city of Sylhet, upazila and municipal town of Sunamganj were flooded. Sylhet-Sunamganj highway and Sylhet-Bholaganj Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibu Rahman highway were submerged. Hundreds of shelters have already been opened in the two districts.
Air traffic has already been suspended due to water rising on the runway of Sylhet airport. On the other hand, the train has stopped due to rising water at the railway station. People's suffering has increased due to power outage. No water, no food, no shelter. All in all, a terrible humanitarian disaster has occurred.
Sylhet's power supply system was shut down after water entered Kumargaon station, one of Sylhet's power substations. Although electricity has been provided in some areas in Sylhet city. Due to the lack of electricity in Sunamganj for the last two days, the mobile network system has completely collapsed, it is not possible to communicate with anyone.
Meanwhile, the army and navy are active in rescuing people trapped in water in flood-affected areas in Sylhet. From Friday afternoon, 10 platoons of the army, 6 medical teams and 35 members of the navy are divided into two teams from Saturday morning.
Navy personnel are using their own cruisers and Air Force helicopters for rescue operations. By afternoon, another team of 60 people joined the rescue effort, along with more cruises and helicopters.
On the other hand, the flood situation in the northern region is also getting worse. Apart from Lalmonirhat, Dinajpur, floods have also occurred in Sirajganj.
